Practical skills for urgent care

 

Overview

This half-day course covers a range of practical uses for point of care ultrasound. It is targetted at Urgent Care providers and Clinical Nurse Specialists/Nurse Practitioners working in the Emergency Department.

It is also well suited to junior doctors who wish to enhance their range of practical skills with point of care ultrasound.

No prior experience in the use of ultrasound is required to attend this course.

Educational Outcomes / Content

This course currently covers the following topics:

  • Identification and aspiration of joint effusions

  • Fracture assessment and reduction

  • Cellulitis vs abcesses

  • Foreign body identification/removal

  • Bladder volumes/catheter balloon location check

Following an introduction to knobology and basic ultrasound physics, the emphasis is on practical information. There will be plenty of time for hands-on scanning in small groups, each with an experienced tutor.

We will have volunteers available for scanning ‘normals’ and phantoms to demonstrate pathology and practice the practical aspects of the procedures.

This course is able to be tailored to specific groups. Please contact us if there are modules you wish to cover that are not currently included.

Faculty

  • Experienced Emergency Physicians with formal qualifications in ultrasound

  • Sonographers with musculoskeletal ultrasound experience.
